An interesting curio by an author who has been largely forgotten writing about a time and place which is often overlooked. The descriptions of life in the cavalry and amongst the landed gentry are beautifully realised and provides the necessary balance to the annoying, sickly daughter. The book has an odd three-stories-in-one structure which works rather well. Oddly enjoyable.
