Treasure Island is a classic story which still works for the modern reader. Stevenson writes with such pace that any flaws are quickly forgotten as you follow the adventures of a young boy who is on the side of the dull, plodding, forces of law and order but captivated by the mad, bad and interesting to know Long John Silver. I think modern thriller writing started with Stevenson, certainly the structure, plot and pace seem contemporary even if the story itself is set in a time of pirates, treasure and lost islands.
