This was a pleasant surprise! Two previous consecutive books on football that confirmed all my prejudices about the ‘beautiful’ game had filled me with resentment for the third, however, it was well written, humorous, and a delight to read. Perhaps it was because it wasn’t actually about football?

  2. Mr Red says:

Surprisingly good novel, perhaps because it focused on a local community and the characters within it, all sharply delineated and memorable. The author built up a good head of suspense and created some extremely funny situations; he deserves to be better known.

  3. Mr Orange says:

Our football trilogy climaxed with this masterpiece, which is regarded as the first football novel. Most football authors are either sports journalists or fans – the latter focused on football gangs/violence. Our two previous books were examples of these types of author and both were predictably disappointing. The Thistle and the Grail works because the football is central to a wider story about the struggles of a small, Scottish community.
