  1. Mr Red says:

For some reason one of our group proposed three novels on football, a game which I do not follow. This was very poor, not in the least interesting if one’s not a fan of the sport, full of clichés and situations that are supposed to be funny but are not. My expectations were low to start with but the book absolutely failed to reach them.

  2. Mr Orange says:

I am afraid that Mr Red’s memory dims with age. The novels were, in fact, voted for by the Group from a shortlist of six. The indifference of my colleagues to the beautiful game meant that four of the shortlist were given equal scores resulting in an immediate change to our longstanding practice of reading all books that score the highest. Quite rightly we limited this number to a maximum of three books from any one list to avoid further whingeing from members unhappy with the books that they themselves democratically selected.

Mr Red is, however, correct that this particular novel was truly terrible – one big, dumb idea (a fan unexpectedly finds himself the Chairman of the hated rival club) is handled badly by an author who would struggle to write a shopping list.
