Will Buckley is a well-respected sports journalist who will not be mistaken for a decent novelist any time soon. His descriptions of a worn-out cynical sports journo who begins to hate his job/life/friends/family are good – as are some of the in-jokes – but the dialogue is stilted and the plot and characters barely plausible. Having the skill to describe things and make the occasional witticism is insufficient when writing a novel as this requires an author to create and populate a world and deliver a compelling story.
Poorly written and unconvincing football novel, with the central character, a football journalist who hates the game, completely implausible. I’m not a football fan, and struggled to work out why I should be interested in this at all.
