This book follows an old-fashioned style of sci-fi writing popularised by Asimov and Clarke, which is more interested in the science than the fiction. The appeal today is in the description of a group of squabbling men (no women involved in serious science, obvs) competing over their different theories on whether an advanced alien life has been trying to contact us. I thought this was vaguely interesting although I understand why others found it intensely boring.
