  1. Mr Red says:

Le Carré was never really the same after the end of the Cold War. The stakes than could hardly be higher – but in post-Cold War novels like this, they were never really high enough. The tv adaptation of this novel upped them intelligently by moving the setting from Latin America to the Middle East, and changing some of the characters and situations; its dénouement was also much more satisfying than the novel’s rather inconclusive ending. Brilliant writing, and gripping narration, of course, but this novel is nowhere near Le Carré’s best.

  2. Mr Orange says:

Le Carré was a great novelist who was unfairly pigeonholed as simply a good thriller writer – no Booker or Nobel Prize for him. It’s well-written, just not up to the high standards of his works from the 60s/70s.

  3. Mr Black says:

While possibly not quite up to the days of George Smiley this is still a well crafted and enjoyable book. Perhaps his writing style worked best when dealing with governments and civil service backdrops and doesn’t sit as comfortably when covering villains running malevolent private organizations. Still would make great reading on a long trip or holiday
