As a great fan of the author I have to say that this doesn’t come close to ‘Do Androids dream of electric sheep?’ or ‘Man in a high castle’ – just a few glimpses of genius.
Philip K Dick is one of the 20th century’s greatest authors. His early works are brilliant and accessible, his later works (mid-70s, post-drug overdose and slide into lunacy) are brilliant and inaccessible. A Scanner Darkly comes from his latter years and remains one of the best books ever written about drug use/abuse. It is, however, not an easy read – bit like James Joyce, you need to read his books in chronological order.
