We read this just before Pamuk was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. It is still not clear whether the Swedish Academy took note of our score in their deliberations.
Not having read many Turkish novels, this was a pleasant surprise. It is set during an interesting period of time (Ottoman Empire) and is a deceptively simple story that is (probably) a commentary on issues in modern-day Turkey. I have read more of Pamuk’s novels since, all of which are equally good.

The Academy was, apparently, waiting for our approval.
