  1. Mr Black says:

I remember in my youth going to see experimental theatre in London and at the time felt it was most profound; fast forward 25 years and I shudder at the pretentiousness of those very same shows. I fear that in 1916 this book was applauded for doing something new, but by 2014 it has totally failed the test of time and remains as worthless literary flotsam.

  2. Mr Red says:

Brilliant writing, memorable and concrete – an extraordinary beginning, writing as the child, and some astonishing passages, for example the sermon that converts Stephen, if only briefly. But it runs out of steam towards the end, and gets less interesting as he reaches maturity.

  3. Mr Orange says:

Still the best place to start with Joyce, slightly underdeveloped but his genius is evident. I agree with Mr Red’s thoughtful contribution – it would be good to hear more from him when he next stumbles on to this website.
