    Over stated piffle, and to make matters worse it is excessively long. By page 350 any mention of a miniaturist from Herat invoked a deep need to self harm.

    Terrifically clever switching of narrative viewpoints, often unexpected, and brilliantly conveys the world of Ottoman miniaturists; but it’s overlong, and by the end one is struggling to maintain an interest in who the murderer is. Nevertheless, many memorable incidents and situations, and it lingers in the mind.
