A flawed novel that contains some brilliant passages on the dark underbelly of Asian societies from a refreshingly different perspective. Particularly memorable was the terrifying journey of the Chineses peasants/illegal immigrants and the sad decline of the aging prostitute, Marlboro Hag, who (rightly) views Professors and Doctors as the most lascivious of her clients.
Scary and brilliant depiction of what the Japanese hothouse method of schooling does to people. Some wonderful passages, especially on the illegal immigrants, but the flaw at the centre of this rather overlong novel is the failure to portray the motivation and psychology of the central characters convincingly.
A mind bending exploration into a very alien culture. Would have had more impact if it had been shorter.
