Had its laugh out loud moments, and captured the reality of the human condition in those few years before we return to dust. Perhaps a little to realistic to be enjoyable.
This was really three books, which didn’t slot together at all. The first was a funny account of what it feels like to start losing your hearing. The second was a moving record of the steady deterioration in mind and body of the author’s aged father. The third was a rather feeble story of academic intrigue and deception, way below the level of Lodge’s previous efforts in this genre. Given the factual basis of his most recent books, it looks like he has lost the ability to write fiction.

The semi-autobiographical parts on aging are quite funny, yet overall it doesn’t quite compare to his earlier books.
