Somerset Maugham writes as gracefully as ever. The story, based loosely on the life of the artist Paul Gauguin, flows along smoothly and there are some good moments. But while Gauguin was part of the art world even before he decided to become an artist, the hero of this book makes a sudden transition out of the blue. Gauguin was also a genius, while it’s never really clear how good Maugham’s hero was. And he’s extremely unsympathetic. Not one of Maugham’s best.
