    We seem to have something against an author’s first book – I found this to be a very enjoyable descent into the inner circle of a traveling medicine show fueled on Sagwa tonic. True, many of the characters were very unappealing, but then so were those from Blood Meridian?

    Deeply unpleasant book full of repulsive characters; the narrative was laboured, plodding and deeply implausible. Attempts at humour fell completely flat as far as I was concerned. The lack of human sympathy was really off-putting.
