This book as lost none of its greatness over time, in fact, even the sterile glare of Bella Italia’s fluorescent lighting failed to dampen our enthusiasm for this enduring work of literature, resulting in a whopping 20.5 score. I suspect other members’ scores would have been even higher if they had the nerve to take on the lesser known sequel which includes the marvellous siege of Madagascar and return journey to England via Russia.
Pulp fiction raised to classic status. I could have done without the earlier picareqsue sections, but once he gets to the island, it’s absolutely gripping. The practical details are absorbing and convincing. But the hero seems excessively paranoid as he constructs one line of fortified defences after another; a certain amount of repetition here. Fortunately I read an edition that did not print the sequel. By all accounts it’s not up to the standard of the main novel.
