One Response to Dead Souls – Nikolai Gogol

  1. Mr Red says:

Startlingly modern satire, often subtle, sometimes laugh-out-loud, with pricelessly funny scenes, wonderful and vivid characters, and a terrific depiction of the quirks and oddities of Russian society in the early 19th century. An absolute masterpiece. Worth it for the bribery scene alone, or the part where the local landowners worry that the main character has bought so many serfs that they will pose a threat to public order when he musters them to transport them to his estate (not realising they are in fact all dead).
