The description of a duel at the end of this book is excellent but not quite enough to save the whole from mediocrity. On this occasion, Mr Black is correct.
The duel is terrific, probably the greatest description of a duel in all literature. But most of the novel was not really thought through, rambling and frankly rather tedious.
